Gunmen ambushed Marley at his home at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, wounding him, his wife Rita, and his manager Don Taylor. Just days after surviving the assassination attempt, Marley performed at the Smile Jamaica concert before fleeing the country.

Miraculously, all survived. With his arm still in a bandage, Marley performed the "Smile Jamaica" concert as scheduled, but he knew he could no longer stay.
