Malathi (Science Teacher, Tenkasi)
🏆 President’s National Award for Best Teacher | 🌍 World Record: 26-hour online marathon class

What happens when a science teacher uses villupattu (a traditional Tamil folk art) to teach Newton’s laws? Students remember for life. S. Malathi, a government school teacher at VK Pudur Government Higher Secondary School in Veerakeralam Pudur, Tenkasi, has been revolutionizing classrooms for 15 years. Her methods include quiz games, puppetry, archery, and even song-based storylines to demystify complex chemistry formulas and the periodic table. For her unprecedented contributions, she was awarded the President’s National Award for Best Teacher on Teacher’s Day 2023, along with the Tamil Nadu Government Radhakrishnan Award.

Malathi stays a student for life: she pursued online courses in robotics, coding, toy-making, and puppetry — even mastering villupattu through YouTube. Long before the pandemic, she was conducting online classes from 7 pm to 8 pm daily for students across the state. During COVID-19, she set a world record by teaching for 26 hours straight. Despite the recognition, her real motivation comes from seeing rural children of wage labourers blossom into curious, confident learners. “I often give them small projects — making a kaleidoscope from broken mirrors. They learn the mechanism as they build it,” she says. She is also pursuing an MSc in Psychology to better understand student behaviour.

“If we want to teach students, we have to update ourselves — reading about physics, app development, robotics.” — S.
